Which Type Of Boiler Is Best For You?
The main difference between an Open Vented and Sealed Boiler System is how the heating system is filled.
Open Vent Boiler System
Open Vent Boiler Systems are known as conventional or regular boilers and are found in many home across the UK. Open Vent Boilers heat a homes radiators and provide hot water for taps and showers.
The term ‘open vent’ refers to the heating system being open to atmospheric pressure. This means, major components including the ‘header tank’ is often found in loft spaces and a hot water storage tank in the airing cupboard of peoples homes. This ‘header tank’ initially fills the boiler and radiator system and from there afterwards controls the water level in the tank. A ball value automatically keeps the tank topped up with water.
An Open Vent Boiler Installation Is Ideal If:
- Your home has an existing Open Vent Boiler System, it is usually easier to directly replace it
- You are happy with how it operated and performed
- Your homes mains water pressure is low
- Your home has an old system of pipes and radiators
- Your home has multiple bathrooms as open vent boiler systems allow hot water to run from multiple outlets.
Downsides Of Open Vent Boiler:
- An Open Vent Boiler requires two tanks so it will occupy a lot of space
- Once the hot water runs out, it will take some time to reheat
- As the ‘header tank’ is often found it roof spaces, it can fill the loft with condensation
- The water pressure is relatively low
Sealed Boiler System
The system boiler sometimes known as a ‘sealed system’ provides central heating and hot water via a storage cylinder housed in an airing cupboard with no need for water tanks in the loft, as with a regular heat only boiler.
A Sealed Boiler Installation Is Ideal If:
- You have no loft space with one boiler usually located in an airing cupboard
- Quick and efficient to install with most components built into the one tank
- Good water pressure
- Hot water can be run from multiple outlets without another being affected
Downsides Of Open Vent Boiler:
- If the hot water is used quickly it can run out
- The system is run at a high pressure so all fittings, valves and radiators have to be in a good condition
- If pressure is lost, the boiler will turn off and stop operating
