Boiler Repair Wirral: 10 Common Boiler Problems and What They Mean

A boiler rarely chooses a convenient time to develop a fault. More often than not, the first sign of trouble appears when you turn the heating on, step into a cold shower or wake up to find the radiators haven’t warmed up.

The good news is that a problem doesn’t automatically mean your boiler needs replacing. Many common boiler faults can be diagnosed and repaired by an experienced boiler repair engineer in Wirral, particularly when they’re dealt with before the underlying problem becomes more serious.

Knowing what the warning signs mean can also help you decide whether you’re dealing with something simple or whether it’s time to call a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Here are ten of the boiler problems we regularly come across in homes across Wirral.

1. Your Boiler Keeps Losing Pressure

Take a look at the pressure gauge on your boiler and, when the system is cold, it will normally sit somewhere around the manufacturer’s recommended operating range.

If the pressure keeps dropping after you’ve topped it up, however, something may need investigating.

A loss of pressure can have several causes. There may be a small leak somewhere in the heating system, a problem with the expansion vessel or an issue with the pressure relief valve.

You might not necessarily see water underneath the boiler either. A small leak elsewhere in the system can be enough for the pressure to gradually fall.

Repeatedly repressurising the boiler without finding out why it keeps losing pressure isn’t a long-term solution. If it becomes a recurring problem, arrange for an engineer to investigate it.

2. You’ve Got Hot Water but No Heating

If the taps are producing hot water but the radiators remain cold, the fact that the boiler is producing hot water at least gives you somewhere to start.

The problem could potentially involve the boiler controls, thermostat, programmer, circulation pump or a component inside the boiler such as a diverter valve.

Before arranging a repair, it’s worth checking that your thermostat is turned up, your programmer is calling for heat and the boiler hasn’t accidentally been switched into a hot-water-only or summer setting.

If everything is set correctly and the heating still refuses to come on, it’s time for an engineer to take a closer look.

3. You’ve Got No Heating or Hot Water

Losing both heating and hot water is a little harder to ignore.

There are plenty of possible explanations, ranging from straightforward pressure or control problems through to failed boiler components.

Check whether the boiler is displaying an error code and make a note of it. You can also check the pressure gauge and confirm that your home’s electricity supply hasn’t tripped.

An error code can be extremely useful when you speak to an engineer, but it doesn’t necessarily tell you which component needs replacing. The underlying cause still needs to be diagnosed properly.

If you need professional help, our boiler repair service covers homes across Wirral.

4. Your Boiler Is Making Strange Noises

Boilers and central heating systems aren’t completely silent, but you get used to what yours normally sounds like.

Banging, rattling, whistling, vibrating or gurgling noises that weren’t there before are worth paying attention to.

Different noises can point towards different problems. Air in the heating system can cause gurgling, while unusual sounds from the boiler itself may involve pumps, fans, restricted circulation or other components.

A particularly noticeable rumbling or kettling sound shouldn’t simply be ignored.

The important thing is not to start taking the boiler apart yourself to investigate. Gas appliances should be inspected and repaired by somebody appropriately qualified.

5. The Radiators Aren’t Heating Properly

Cold radiators don’t always mean there’s something wrong with the boiler.

If a radiator is warm at the bottom but cold towards the top, trapped air may be the culprit. If it’s cold at the bottom, deposits within the heating system could be affecting circulation.

When several radiators are struggling, or certain parts of the house never seem to warm up properly, the wider central heating system may need attention.

Our central heating services in Wirral cover complete heating systems rather than just the boiler itself.

Problems caused by accumulated sludge may sometimes require power flushing to restore circulation, although the system needs to be assessed first to determine the appropriate solution.

6. Your Boiler Keeps Switching Itself Off

A boiler that starts normally but repeatedly switches itself off is telling you something isn’t right.

Low water pressure, circulation problems, thermostat issues and faulty internal components are among the potential causes.

The pattern can sometimes provide useful information. Does it shut down immediately? Does it run for ten minutes first? Does it only happen when the heating is on?

Make a note of exactly what’s happening and any error code appearing on the display. That information can help your heating engineer narrow down the fault.

7. There’s Water Leaking From the Boiler

Water around a boiler should always be investigated.

Where it’s coming from matters. A leak might involve a valve, seal, pipe connection or internal component, and the repair required will depend on the cause.

Don’t remove the boiler casing or attempt an internal repair yourself.

If you notice a leak, switch the appliance off if it is safe and appropriate to do so and arrange for a qualified engineer to inspect it.

A small amount of water can cause a surprising amount of damage if it’s allowed to continue dripping into kitchen units, flooring or the surrounding wall.

8. Your Energy Bills Have Increased

A boiler doesn’t necessarily have to stop working to have a problem.

Sometimes the first sign is that it simply isn’t performing as efficiently as it once did.

There are lots of reasons household energy consumption can change, so a higher bill isn’t proof that the boiler is at fault. However, if you’re using your heating in roughly the same way and consumption has increased noticeably, the heating system is worth checking.

This is one reason why regular boiler servicing in Wirral is important. Servicing gives an engineer an opportunity to inspect the appliance and identify developing problems rather than waiting for a complete breakdown.

We’ve also explained why servicing your boiler is so important in more detail elsewhere on our blog.

9. The Boiler Needs Repairing More and More Often

One repair on an otherwise reliable boiler isn’t necessarily a concern.

When repairs start becoming a regular occurrence, the calculation begins to change.

If you’re spending money several times a year keeping an ageing boiler running, it may eventually make more financial sense to put that money towards a replacement.

Age isn’t the only consideration. The condition of the boiler, availability and price of replacement parts, repair cost and reliability all matter.

We’ve previously covered some of the main signs that you may need a boiler replacement.

A good heating engineer should be prepared to tell you when a repair remains worthwhile and when replacing the appliance deserves serious consideration.

10. The Boiler Won’t Start at All

A completely unresponsive boiler can be caused by something as simple as an interrupted electrical supply, but it can also indicate a fault requiring professional attention.

Check the obvious things first.

Has a circuit tripped? Is the programmer switched on? Is the thermostat calling for heat? Is there an error code on the boiler?

If those basic checks don’t solve the problem, don’t repeatedly reset the appliance in the hope that it’ll eventually start working.

Arrange for it to be inspected.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Boiler?

This is ultimately the question many homeowners ask us.

There’s no rule saying that a boiler must be replaced simply because it reaches a certain age.

A well-maintained older boiler that’s suffered a relatively minor fault may be perfectly sensible to repair. Equally, spending a substantial amount repairing an unreliable boiler when other components are also reaching the end of their useful life may not represent good value.

If replacement does make more sense, our new boiler installers in Wirral can assess your property and provide a free quotation for a suitable replacement.

We’ll look at the existing heating system, your property and your hot water requirements rather than automatically replacing the old appliance with the nearest equivalent.
